An abandoned tobacco barn - a view of the past.
Most people know that North Carolina's biggest crop was tobacco. In 1950, 850 million pounds of tobacco was grown in NC. In the 1990's, only 436 million pounds were grown. My husband remembers working the tobacco fields and going to the auctions. It's a whole different world now. Besides the decline of tobacco, there are new methods of curing tobacco which don't require the flue-cure barns. So all across the state are the obsolete abandoned barns. This is one on my way to work right beside the highway! Of course, the highway has only been here for about a year so I guess the barns were here first.
